A centerpiece of this year's slate of special drawings for public hunts by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is the offering of guided hunts for desert bighorn sheep. This is the first year that the public hunt special drawings have offered bighorn sheep hunts.

There is an Oct. 10 deadline to apply in the special drawings for the bighorn sheep hunts and for two other guided public hunt packages - a gemsbok hunt and a white-tailed deer hunt - on Mason Mountain Wildlife Management Area.

The department initially had planned to award a sheep hunt to only one winner, however, the decision to add another was made based on recent surveys indicating additional harvestable rams. The sheep hunts will be this winter in the mountains of West Texas. Guide service, food and lodging will be provided during the 3-5 day hunts. These two sheep hunts will be in addition to the bighorn sheep hunt that is awarded each year in the Texas Grand Slam drawing.

Applications for TPWD drawings on public hunting lands are available at agency offices statewide or by calling 800-792-1112. Individuals 17 and older may apply in the bighorn sheep hunt drawing. There is a limit of one application per person. Completed applications accompanied by a $10 application fee must be received at the Austin TPWD office by 5 p.m. on Oct. 10 to be included in the bighorn sheep hunt drawing.
