The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Maryland Park Service announced the 2010-2011 dates for archery and firearms deer hunts at Wye Island Natural Resources Management Area (NRMA).

This year's dates for archery hunts are now through October 20, October 25 through November 26, December 13-17, January 3-6, 2011, and January 10-31, 2011, Monday through Saturday only. No archery hunting will be allowed during the muzzleloader and firearms season.

Hunting is limited to 25 archery deer hunters per day, and all hunters must sign in and out using the self-registration system at the Wye Island check-in station. All deer harvested at Wye Island as part of the archery hunt will be considered part of the daily and seasonal bag limit for archery in Region B, and must be checked-in through the Maryland Big Game Registration System either online at or by telephone at 1-888-800-0121. All pertinent laws and regulations apply; consult the Maryland Guide to Hunting and Trapping 2010-11 for details.

During the late archery season (December 16 through January 31, 2011), lottery hunts for Atlantic population Canada Geese will also be held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from sunrise to 1 p.m., and bow hunting areas will be limited. Hunters should check the hunting map upon arrival at Wye Island NRMA.

The muzzleloading hunt will be held October 21-23. All deer harvested at Wye Island as part of this hunt will be considered part of the daily and season bag limit for the Muzzleloader Deer Season.

Wye Island NRMA's December firearms hunt will be held during the second week of the Deer Firearm Season, December 6-11. All deer harvested at Wye Island as part of this hunt will be considered part of the daily and season bag limit for the Deer Firearm Season. Firearm applications for the December hunt must be postmarked on or before October 25. Permits will be selected by random drawing on November 1 at 2 p.m. One application per hunter with a maximum of three applications per group hunt (all group applications should be stapled together).

Separate applications must be filed for the October and December deer hunts. Successful applicants will be required to have a Managed Hunt Permit (MHP) at the time of their hunt; more information on the MHP can be found at or in the Maryland Guide to Hunting and Trapping 2010-2011.

Hunt applications are available in the Maryland Guide to Hunting and Trapping 2010-2011 or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Wye Island NRMA, 632 Wye Island Road, Queenstown, MD 21658. Applications can also be downloaded from the DNR website at For additional information or details regarding hunting opportunities at Wye Island NRMA, call the office at 410-827-7577.

Hunters are reminded to follow the fundamental rules of hunting safety, especially the principles of safe firearm handling. Hunters are also asked to wear a full body safety harness every time they hunt from an elevated position, as treestand falls remain the primary cause of hunting injuries and fatalities and a full body safety harness will almost always save a life or prevent injury in the event of a fall. Coupled with a prussic-knot climbing line, which allows the hunter to ascend and descend the tree without fear of falling during transition, the full body safety harness is the most important tool a hunter can bring into the treestand every time they go afield.
