The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission is seeking public input on a draft plan to manage chronic wasting disease in Wyoming. Two public meetings will be held to present the plan and gather public input. The public can also view the plan on the Game and Fish Web site at CWD Draft and provide written comments by mail.

The first public meeting will be in Casper Sept. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Pronghorn Room at the Game and Fish Regional Office at 3030 Energy Lane. The second public meeting will be in Jackson Sept. 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Antler Inn basement conference room, 43 W. Pearl Avenue.

Written comments will be accepted at both meetings or can be mailed to: CWD Plan Comments, c/o Christie Christensen, Wyoming Game and Fish Department, 5400 Bishop Blvd., Cheyenne, WY 82006. The deadline for comments is 5 p.m. Sept. 30, 2005.

The draft plan is a revision of the current Game and Fish plan to manage CWD in the state. “We’ve learned a lot more about CWD in the last five years or so,” said Game and Fish Deputy Director Gregg Arthur. “The revisions we’re making are based on some new knowledge about the disease and the fact that CWD is continuing to spread within Wyoming. It represents an aggressive effort to slow the spread of the disease, continue conducting research to learn more about the disease, and to keep the public informed about the impacts of CWD on wildlife and any potential consequences to human health.”

The draft plan contains four major components: disease management, applied research, public information and funding. Under disease management, there is a new section dealing with the potential for CWD to reach elk feedgrounds in northwestern Wyoming.

The G&F supports the Americans with Disabilities Act. Anyone needing auxiliary aids to attend these meetings should call (307) 777-4600. Every effort will be made for reasonable accommodations.
