I read my post again, and realized how vague it was. I am not trying to hide my hunting grounds, cause anyone with a BLM map can find me on any given day. I hunt alot of public land, and also a bunch of block management. Since I hunted west in the CMR on Fort Peck last year (luck was not with me, missed what I am sure what would have been my best mule deer to date), I will probably go south to the Ekalaka/Ashland area this year. Just want to see all of the state I can, since I didnt as a younger man and never know when work will take me out of the "Last Great Place." I really try to find large block managemet areas, surrounded by public land, and pick a large area with little or no road access and good topo map qualities. Then, start hiking and see what I can see. More than a mile off the road I very seldom run into other hunters, and there is very rarely OHV use allowed on block management land, and absolutely none on BLM. Get beyond the first draw or two, and that is where I spend my time. When are you going to be in the Ashland area? Hunting public/private? Maybe if we are in the same area at the same time, I can buy you a cold bev. of your choice?
I had an acl replacement surgury june 2nd. So no chasing mulies up high this year. probably shoot a whitetail around the house.

BigCallin, I'm planning on being in MT on 11/15. We plan on hunting Public and might check into Block Management. I'm also planning on hunting with Bullelk34 aka Carl. I'm really looking forward to hunting some MT deer.
Did you order your block management books yet? Get them off the montana fish, game & parks website. If for some reason you dont get them, let me know. I will help you out if you need it. If you order soon, you should have no trouble. As for the cold one, I may have to recind my former offer. I will travel to Denver on Monday for meetings for work, and return to Montana on the 16th. Now, I may talk to the Boss and see if she will let me just go hunting on my return trip, so there may be hope. But, alas, I fear the worst. I am seldom successful in having fun (without her, that is) soon after I return from business trips. I will work on it though, just cause that would be a great time to stop on my way home and look for some good mulies. I have never hunted down there, so I am excited to get down there. Good luck to ya!!!!!
Thanks for the reminder. I requested the Block Mgmt books awhile back but for some reason I never received them. I called and they are sending them out to me. I'm not sure if we'll hunt Block Mgmt or not but just in case I'll get them.
I was hoping to get in a couple of trip to MT this fall but the first one didn't work out.
If it works out maybe we can hook up in November.
What's a mule deer look like anyway Jeff? I've heard of them but never seen one....... My wife and I went out last weekend to scout for deer and shoot some fall turkeys in Eastern Montana (she got 2, I got 1), it's going to be a good year for deer! Last night I did some driving aroung out here and saw some good deer too, as well 10 bulls (7 were 6x6) and about 40 cows and calves. They're bugling their heads off so it was quite a sight. October 22 sure is going to come slow.........
Carl
Out scouting yesterday, had a great day. I saw at least 150 speed goats, a coyote stalking deer with fawns (only time all year I have been out this year without my 22-250!!!! ,)), bunch of WT, and a lot more mulies. Had my 20 ga for Grouse and ran into a few turkies. I put the old army crawl stalk on them, and stood 10 feet away from them, all cammoed up, behind a tree and listened to them discuss whether or not they should flush. They decided not to until I charged them like a nutjob, screaming & waving my hands. It was a bunch of fun (wish my son would have been with me). I woulda taken one if I would have had my 12, cause I have a turkey tag. Just thought the 20 might be a bad idea. Any way, to stay with the forum topic, I could only walk around about two miles or so, so I didnt cover much country. When I talked to the ranch owner, she told me that she has seen two mulies this year that top any in her memory, past their ears & lots of mass. I hope to run into them in October. Great ranch, LOTS & LOTS of juniper, rolling hills, & creek bottoms. I am excited about the season, more & more every day!
Carl, you did pretty good on that monster muley you killed last year, for a guy whose not sure what one looks like, Congrats to you and your Bride on the Turkeys.
I'm glad the deer are looking good.
Big Callin, I'd be bummed about not having that 12 GA. I personally think those song dogs kill a lot more deer and speed goats then we give them credit for.
I ALWAYS have my 22-250 when bird hunting & scouting. Lots of young dogs out in the fall, just breakin free of ma & pa and hunting on their own. I usually nail a couple. I especially hate leaving them when they are near cattle, as that one sunday was, AND stalking deer. Really irritates me. I know that the calves are pretty big by this time, and a lone dog prolly wont take one down, but it would be one less all the same. They sure aint hurtin population wise around here.
I recieved my Block Management books in the mail. Bullelk34, Do you think we'll hunt BMT?
