Due to the low amount of any elk here in my home state of Washington most areas in Eastern Wa are either Spike only or any elk. I do firmly belive in shooting spike elk. because in these ares where it is spike only the ones that do make it through the season will most definately be a decent bull in a couple of years. As far as the pissing and moaning in this fourm goes toward the taking of a spike. I have two words for you SCREW OFF. They traste better than some old rough and tough bull or cow for that matter any day. Not to mention they aren't as hard to pack outa the Mountians. As far as I am concerned Nonya you are as well off as any in your right to shoot a spike if your state and area permits you to do so. Here in Washington you can hunt for years and not even see an elk let alone a spike to shoot.

Where are you hunting that you don't see Elk or gives you impression that there are very few Elk in Wa.

Most every area I hunt is either antlerless or 3 point or better and there are plenty of them that are in the 3 point or better class.

They're out in the pastures feeding with the cattle. They eat a fair share of food daily. They're alway looking for something to stick in the belly. Always on the move.
I've seen archery and muzzleloader Elk areas that allow spikes but they do limit the take to keep the herds strong.
If I wanted some good eating I'd be looking for an area that wants to thin the cows, to keep the herd strong.

I agree with fuzzybear on that, the cows are just as good. With doe deer and bucks, I don't taste much difference, but then I've also eaten coyote so I might not have the sensitive taste buds that others have.
