New Mexico Unit 30 hunters (Southeast)?

Howdy - just wanted to see if any of you have hunted desert mulies in New Mexico Unit 30 in the southeast part of the state. I drew a tag for the end of October, but I got deployed to Korea for 4 months so my scouting time is going to be almost nonexistant. Does anyone have any info or suggestions for the unit? Can't figure out if I want to concentrate in the foothills southeast of Pinon or head further south to the Guadalupe Mtns close to the Texas border (north of Guadalupe Mtns National Park and West of Carlsbad Caverns). Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

New Mexico Unit 30 hunters (Southeast)?

I have hunted in Unit 30 for the past 10 years. The area around Pinon can get crowded. We've had the best luck around the Queens area of the Lincoln National Forest. There is a place called coon dog wells, it's marked on the map, that has had some really nice muleys taken. The best was a 5x5 28 incher about 3 or 4 years ago. If you have a 4-wheeler, you can try to get on the north west side of the Carlsbad Caverns. Deer have a habit of going toward the park during the season. If you have a map I could give you a better idea where to go. Let me know if you need any more info.

I agree, the mountain area

I agree, the mountain area and up into the Nat Forest is a good spot to go. Lots and lots of deer.

Hello, I have also hunted

I have also hunted unit 30 for several years now. Most of my hunts have been up in the national Forest where I have seen a great deal of deer.  There are alson good deer in near the Pecos river.

Good luck.Wink
