I am applying for my ME moose hunting permit this year. I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions on to what areas would be good to apply for. I am mainly interested in hunting the first season. I know that my chances are slim being a non-resident and don't plan on getting drawn for a few years but you can't win if your not in. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
nyarcher, I have told a lot of people to pick the area just above RT 9. (the downeast area of Maine)
There are as many moose there as there are anywhere.
But up In Ashland they have big problems with car collisions with moose and they need to thin the heard out some.
I know one guy last year had the first hunt up that way and they bagged a bull.
I also know a guy that had a permit in the same area for the second season and didn't get any moose.
The Downeast area of Maine I don't think has been hunted as hard as what northen Maine has been over the years.
I know to that when I was fishing up that way (northen Maine) in June I see more moose than what I have seen in a long time.
So it is a 50-50 no matter what you do. But if you can get the first season I think it would be better.
I may not have been a bit of help to you at all.
My father and I got a 650lb cow on Johnson Mountain, south of Jackman with our truck.....Ouch!
The truck stayed in Maine and the moose came home in the trunk of the rental car.
MaineGuide, Could you explain the multiple Choice Option, I am just a little unsure as to what they mean.
nyarcher, I will be up front with you. I am not sure about all of the ins and outs of the permit system for moose.
But if you go to Maine's Dif+w's website they can help you. There website is

hunter777 sorry to hear about that that is not a good way to to have a fun hunt.
NYARCHER, good luck. I hope you get drawn soon. I always have thought about it but, figured it would be too long before I got the chance to go. Do they have a point system? If so I would have been applying for almost 10 years since the first time I wanted to go and would probobly be real close to getting a permit by now.
We had a lot of fun even though we smashed our truck. We went to Maine to get one of the biggest deer in the world and thats exactly what we did, just thought it would have been a whitetail though!
The insurance paid for the rental and totaled the truck and got more money for that than it was worth too!

nyarcher, Did you find out what you wanted to know about the points system? If so I hope you did and it was some help to you.
Yes I think that I found out what I needed to know Thanks for everyones help. Now it is just a waiting game.
Does anyone have any idea just how many points a non-resident needs to get a permit
My family and I have been applying for years, can you say 8 years, and NO ONE has been drawn yet,I feel like its a unfair system,as a lot of yanks get drawn and very few of us southern boys ever get a chance,go ahead and look at the list of successful applications, the numbers dont lie,if you live up north your wait will be short, but of you l;ive in the south ,see you in line. The only reason we even apply now is becuase we have donated a lot of money to there state ,and would love to have a tag,we even requested a cow tag, nope not yet,but all 9 applications are in again this year,so maybe, one tag will be ours.I bagged a 49inch bull in alberta, but I will mention that on every canada hunt,we have been on ,it always is a diesater, period, stay in the states is our moto now.well anyway good luck to all in the drawing.chett
