Light 500 BPE or 500 NE loads?

I have a 500 express that I am restoring.  It is from the tail end of the black powder era, so while it is stamped 'NE' I think I'd be more comfortable with lighter pressures.  The 500 nitro express and 500 Black Powder express cartridges are not interchangeable loads even though the projectiles and brass are identical.  But load data from either would be helpful.  I'll be loading a cast lead bullet of about 350 grains.  Proof load stamped on it is 136 grains of black powder with a 340 grain bullet.  I'm looking for a smokeless powder load on the light side of that to work up from.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Not the Same Round

Mike these two puppies are not the same .. If it's a BPE , you definetly do not want to load NE charges in it ..

I am aware that they are not interchangeable loads even though the projectiles and brass are identical.  I'll edit my original post to make that a little more clear.  My test load for the gunsmith is 60 grains of 3031 behind a 320 grain cast lead bullet.  After we make sure that she functions well, I can tweak the load and try other recipes.  I’m wondering if the jacketed 50 caliber slugs made for muzzle loaders can be adapted to produce an accurate 500 BPE load? 

 

Time will tell.
