This one's easy. The Ice Age ended when man discovered fire. No sooner did they start assaulting the planet with greenhouse gasses from cookfires than temperatures rose, causing glacial retreat and mass extinctions.

Of course, as the climate changed and people started to cultivate food, they soon discovered alcohol. This in turn led to men sitting around a campfire and discovering that flatulence is flammable. That accelerated the warming significantly and ultimately doomed the mammoth.

To all reading this, please note that since the Office of The President Elect was established there are some "new" replacement words that are more in-line with Political Correctness.
First is the term "Global Warming" will hence forth be referred to as "Global Climate Change".
Second, The term "Torture" will hence forth be referred to as "Enhanced Interrogation".
Thirdly, The term "Gun Control" will hence forth be referred to as "Ammunition Accountability Act".
Please use the PC terms in all further posts.

Finally, can anyone answer how the ice age ended without man?

The answer is pretty simple, most ice ages end when green house gases (primarily co2) build to a level that warming can occur. co2 builds during an ice age because a good portion of the northern hemisphere no longer has active photosynthesis (green plants growing on an annual cycle and dropping the carbon storage on the ground in the fall as leaves or dead stems, etc). Check the vostok record it correlates atmospheric co2 levels with global temperatures.

The northern hemisphere plant growth is quite powerful at removing co2 from the atmosphere. Check out this link:

http://www.esrl.noaa.gov/gmd/ccgg/trends/

The annual ups/downs of co2 concentration correspond to when the northern hemisphere is tilted away furtherest from the sun (winter) and then closest (summer). Peaks occur in the winter and valleys in the summer.

So what you're saying is that global warming is natural, cycllical and would occur even without man?

Blasphemy!!! Heretic!!!! The AlGorians will be paying you a visit.

How many carbon credits do you have to purchase to offset the cost of burning a heretic at the stake?

Meanwhile, it's been more than two weeks since I've seen the thermometer above -40, which is extremely rare. What the article below doesn't say is that our summer also came late, ended early, and was several degrees cooler than normal.

I'm waiting for the inevitable article explaining how all this is happening because of global warming.

Whadaya talking about with all that c02 vostok atmospheric greenhouse complicated stuff? It was FLATULENCE!! It had to be. Al gore said that cow flatulence can cause global warning. So MAMMOTH flatulence is obviously much much worse! Because Al wan't around to collect any carbon credits then, obviously all the ice melted. As a result there were no martinis to be had and the potato crops failed nearly wiping out civilization. Thus began the great potato famine and martini meltdown. Then Cromwell came and made war on the Irish and there was even less vodka nearly ending civilization as we know it. And that's the way it was according to BunnySlayer's history lesson. After all, Al Gore wouldn't lie to me...........would he? I mean he invented the internet........Right??

Yup and I don't think anybody who is serious about the subject would deny otherwise.

I've not paid attention to al gore since 2000 when he ran against bush. He's a politician dabbling in a field that demands politically unbiased science, therefore I've never read his climate change book or seen the video....

I tend to believe that anthropogenic driven climate change is certainly possible and probably already occurring. The atmospheric rise in co2 over the last two hundred years is undeniable and the data linking this rise to human activity is strong.

Rising co2 levels will most likely have a warming effect in the short run. Whether this is bad is debatable, given the horrendous ice ages of the past and the cataclysm it would be to those living in the northern hemisphere, I tend to think that a hedge against an ice age is not necessarily bad. But how much co2 is a hedge?
