Pulling the gun out of the box I cocked the hammer back and expected it to be ready for a dry fire (I know never dry fire)... My questions... shouldn't the hammer have stayed in the firing position (mine didn't seem to lock)... and Secondly what's the longest kill shot that could be expected from a gun like this.[/i]

I also have just received one for christmas. From what I have read and seen you can shoot out to 200 yards with the right loads.
And yes the hammer should of stayed in the cocked position.
