Anybody had any close calls with a rattler?
Back in the days that I was working I step on a couple along with digging into a den of them. Not to mention the ones that I found when we were haying. They were either choped up or you would pick up a bale of hay and find one underneath it. Hunting whise I have found a couple of dens of them in Arizona while javilena hunting. I have also found a few while I have been fishing. But nothing too serious yet, at least any more than having to clean the shorts out.
I have had a few. Closest was while doing a little "stalking" of a group of people (my job), when I was lying down in some waitst high grass. I heard some movement to my left in the grass, and thought it might be them circling back around, maybe 20 yards away. Well, that's when I heard the rattle, and realized it was only about 20 inches from it......
I moved away rather slowly and quietly......
Hunting? no thank god, when i was 14 i was in central oregon hiking and damn near stepped on one, i high tailed it out of there. This past August camping in central oregon there was one in the camp ground near the bathrooms. some kid beat it with a stick and brought it to the park rangers.
Wood'nt say a close call, but it was bout 3 feet from me...This past weekend i was sit'n on a bucket in some cover, notice'd some movemint in front on me in pine needle's,he (it)was bout 2 to 2nhalf feet long....Red touch's Yellow Kill a Fellow,Red touch's Black Friend of Jack....He was'nt no Friend...
We find em' every year around camp. Some pretty big black phase timber rattlers. I think the biggest so far was just shy of 6'. We just move em' down the valley and continue on. There was a city boy up there working for the gas companies though surveying the land and he ran into a few. Boy...talk about laugh. He was at the bar crying up a storm about how he's not cut out for this.
Thats some funny stuff, I love when i get to take some newbs to the woods for the first time and they freak out over every little sound or the bugs flying or walking into a spider web, Its great fun and i get a great laugh out of it.
Closest call I ever had was when one was coiled up in an old tractor spare tire while I was out turket hunting...as I came by the tire he rattled. I could see him in the tire so I proceeded to get as far away as I could from that tire....I hate snakes!!!!
Here in Texas we have the Sweetwater Rattlesnake Roundup, where we round up a crap load of snakes. I've come across quite a few....on purpose.

I have seen many rattle snakes, but have never gotten bitten by one. Biggest was a 6' diamond back up in the mountains in New Mexico. It was crossing a dirt road when we saw it. We killed it.
Then while at work around Cajon Pass, California at night we had not seen this rattle snake and we had been stepping on it while picking up some railroad cars that had derailed with cranes, but again we were lucky we didn't get bitten. We all took off running after we saw it.
Deer hunting in Beaver, Utah I was walking down a trail and I saw this thing that looked like a flower on the ground. It was a baby rattler all curled up. Just went around it and let it go.
Most recent was posted in the turkey section under, Turkey hunters be cautious! . Darn near stepped on a 44 incher with 12 rattles. I've had others over the years and in our front and back yard the last two years.
