I live in Ohio, and I was wondering if anyone out there in the Rockies could give me a clue the odds of ever drawing an out of state tag on a Big Horn Ram.
Most western states have lottery style draw, for most big game with preference points to increase the odds. Cant speak for everywhere but in wyoming, it takes about 12-14 years to accumilate enough points to get a tag for a ram, probably canada or alaska might be better bets than the rockies. hope this helps
Thanks for the input. Do you know the price range of these tags?
If this is a "next couple years" deal than I would suggest looking into guided hunts in Canada. I believe Alberta has some really good sheep hunting. It's like winning the lottery to get ram tags in CO.
Wyoming big horn sheep non red is 2300 Plus some other fees you have to pay up front and if not drawn they refund all but application fee see Wyoming fish an gamefor all the info.
there's always some good ones taken in idaho every year but it's a bit spendy at 1,765.75 which includes your tag, license, and app fee. most of the big one's including the 197 7/8 were shot in unit 11. but with there only being one tag in unit 11 it would suit you well to apply for one of the salmon of the hunts in the river of no return wilderness.
As was said if you feel lucky you can put in for one of the western states that has them or go with an outfitter. I have a friend that has a grand slam of sheep and he did most of it through the draws. He is the luckiest person that I know of. Either that or the $100 bill that he taped to his application did some good. Just for looking here is a web site that does sheep hunts for you.
Thanks guys, I really appreciate the info. This would definitely be a dream hunt of mine.
the wildsheep foundation or the grand slam club would be of help to you.
IF you want to apply in the us start now and eventually you will draw a tag.
if you go to canada expect to pay alot of money. $30,000.00 plus.
