I wouldn't call it hunting,
BUT if they had simply killed the birds in the pen, like chickens in a slaughter house, and then sent them to the needy people no one would have said anything. This world is becoming more and more backwards everyday

Well said Bnow. It isn't hunting like probably 95% of us experience. I've never even seen 10 pheasant in a day let alone 400 in a morning.

But I guess taken from the food perspective your right.

One thing that bothers me, is the fish and game will hang a hunter out to dry that shoots a deer with a tag that was given to him by another hunter that lawfully obtained it, but yet a 400 bird shoot doesn't bat an eye. It seems that what is defined as "right" and "wrong" is artifical with regards to the take of game from time to time.

Yeah I haven't had any experience with the tags thing b/c we don't have them here, But it stands to reason that as long as the tag was obtain legally and both hunters are leaglly able to use a tag that it wouldn't be a problem. The fact that they were pen rasied birds might have something to do with it. If I pen raise deer does that give me the right to shoot as many as I like in a day?

When I read this story I thought to myself, "What was he thinking!?!" It would take all of about 5 seconds thought to realize that the press was going to spin this in a very negative way.

This really wasn't "hunting," it was just shooting. Yes, nobody would have given it a second thought if he had gone to a slaughterhouse and helped to butcher some animals for charity. But this just plays into all of the worst stereotypes that the anti-hunters try to perpetuate.

It was just really bad judgment for him to go and do this.

Definitely. But like Don, I have the same reaction. It isn't hunting, but yet the participants will use "we were hunting" as a defense for the acts. Right or wrong, I think it does damage to the hunter's image in the eye of the non-hunter, even if that isn't what a high percentage of us would call hunting.

Where's the thrill in shooting pen-raised pheasants?

Although, who am I to judge, I've never had the opportunity of walking into a field of 500 near flightless birds and firing off my 12 gauge at pheasants that would eat out of my hand....

This just sounds like expensive target practice... I think I'll stick to my 2-3 bird trips, if I'm lucky...
