Utah Not Immune from Bear Attack Lawsuit

The Utah Supreme Court recently ruled that the state of Utah is not immune from a lawsuit brought by the family of Sam Ives. In 2007, Sam was camping with his family in American Fork Canyon when he was attacked and killed by a black bear. The Salt Lake Tribune has a write up about the Utah Supreme Court ruling.

Stricter Gun Control Support at Historic Low

Gallup has their annual gun control poll up here. This year's poll continues the trend of previous polls showing less support for more gun control and growing support for no change or less gun control. 44% of Americans want more gun control, 42% want to keep it as it is, and 12% want less gun control.

Central Wyoming Deer Hunting: Regions D, E and J

Central Wyoming’s Regions E, D and J represent incredibly diverse habitat types.  In Region J, you have shortgrass prairie to the east and south of the Laramie Peak Range, then sagebrush basins to the west.  Region D contains the Snowy Range and even more sagebrush, plus a few small canyons and more prairies.  Region E contains the Wind River country as well as the vast basins east of Lander.  These regions are rarely spoken of as traditional deer hunting hot spots but contain some excellent country.

Surprise December BigGameHunt Grand Slam Challenge Round

As most of you may be aware by now, we have been conducting a contest called the BigGameHunt Grand Slam Challenge contest each month since July. BGH members compete based on the quantity and quality of their contributions to the BigGameHunt website.

Originally we intended to only hold five rounds, one for each of the months from July through November. However we are pleased to announce that we will be having a surprise 6th round starting off December 1st and running though the final day of 2010. The reason we decided to have an additional round is because Vanguard generously offered a variety of binoculars, tripods, and shooting sticks to sponsor December. We decided to throw in a Remington 700 XCR in 300 Remington Ultra Mag and a few Wyoming knives to bring the total number of prizes up to 10.

Non-Resident Takes Rare Colorado Desert Bighorn

Colorado isn't known for its desert bighorn population. However while the population is small it is also growing and this year marks the first year that a non-resident was able to take a Colorado desert bighorn. Do not get too excited though if you're thinking of applying from out-of-state, only one non-resident license was awarded this year.

The Denver Post has a good write up on this year's hunt by Dick Sapa of Montana.

Mule Deer Dons Christmas Lights

With each passing holiday season there seem to be more folks complaining about "Christmas Creep," where retailers push the holiday buying season further into early November. Some good anecdotal evidence that the Christmas season is starting earlier, is there appears to be more mule deer getting holiday lights wrapped around their antlers earlier and earlier. This year it's not even Thanksgiving yet and there are two incidents already in the media spotlight.

Potential New Record Montana Pronghorn

The Helena Independent Record has an article running about Kody Baker and his record book antelope that he took near east Helena. The buck has not been offically recognized by Pope and Young yet, but it dry scores at 86, which is a bit more than the 84 2/8 that has stood since 1989.

Elk Hunter Stumbles Across Plesiosaur

Invariably the sheer number of hunters hitting the great outdoors uncovers some unusual items every fall. This fall a Montana elk hunter was lucky enough to stumble across the fossil remains of a carnivore from 75 million years ago.

The Daily Mail has a story about David Bradt and his unusual find.

Another Poacher Nailed on Facebook

According to the Star Tribune a 20 year-old has been caught after he posted his ill-gotten game on Facebook.

The hunter posted a photo on Facebook of a small buck he killed in September during the archery season, then posted a photo of an 8-point trophy buck he arrowed in October. In Minnesota, hunters can kill only one buck per season. He later posted a photo of him and two buddies posing with 12 Canada geese they shot.

Petrzilka Takes Impressive Nebraska Buck has a good write up about the Petrzilka family and a huge typical whitetail that Kevin Petrzilka took last Friday. The green score on the buck is 203 4/8 which would beat the state record of 199 1/4 by a good margin, offical score will be out in a few months.
