My name is Chuck I live on a remote homestead in southcentral Alaska with my wife and sons. We got our land through the old Alaska homestead program and have lived here for nearly 15 years. I make an alleged living as a hunting guiding and as an alleged outdoor writer. Our 15 acre homestead is about a half mile from a small lake that serves as our local airport and community center. Everything is flown in & out by small bush planes so we don’t get to town much and use as many local resources as possible. Our only full time neighbor is an 86 year old guy who gets insulted if I offer to help him with his firewood. Other than a few seasonal cabins on the lake my family and Bud are the only one who live here year round.
We don’t get all of our food out here but we do hunt, fish, gather, and raise a large garden for a good bit of it. The moose population in our area crashed a few years so the Board of Game designated it as an Intensive Management Area. IM means we don’t get to hunt moose but every year we get predator control permits that allow us to get all the black bears we want. Black bear along with salmon from the Talachulitna River is our mainstay.
