Spot and Stalk

My preferred method of hunting is spot and stalk. Here are a few tips for anyone wanting to try it. First get to a good vantage point remembering not to skyline yourself. I usally set up on a south facing slope glassing a north facing slope. The key is to find them going from their feeding grounds to the bedding areas (typically north slope). Once you spot an animal worth going after, put him to bed and plan your stalk.

Keep in mind to play the wind and keep it in your face. That can sometimes be tricky with morning and afternoon thermals. In the morning you will usually have an updraft and in afternoon a down draft. Once you plan your route pick out landmarks. Follow your planned route. When I get to about 100 yrds I will take my boots off to reduce noise. Also if you can try to come at your animal from above this will make it harder for it to bust you keeping wind in mind. Once you get within range and everything works out, you should have your trophy in your sights. Good luck and happy hunting.

Maybe we could do this next year.

that could work.

It would be fun, and if you havent hunted elk before its very addicting and a hella good time when a 1000lb animal is screaming at you at 20 yards

Elk is probably the number 1

Elk is probably the number 1 animal on my list to hunt. who knows maybe we can hook up some yime or switch off on some hunts. You can come and get one of these big Ohio brutes and I would gladly slap a tag on one of those giant elk. And no, I've never hunted out west.

that would be great

For a non-res tag its $500 and $140 for a lic, so its not to bad. I could get, I really enjoy helping others get ther critters. Mid to late sept the are rutting and relativly easy to call in. we do have some big bruisers out here.
