First Bowhunting Success

My second year of bow hunting had arrived. It was October of 1997. I decided to go out for an evening hunt with my bow. I arrived at my treestand around 4pm. I was hunting up on top of a hill in a small apple orchard. This apple orchard is surrounded by hardwoods, mainly oaks, and a small country cemetary.

I lived in Pueblo Colorado during most of 1997.  At the time, I was working for Peak Aviation, at the airport in Pueblo, refueling airplanes.  One morning, I was a bit early arriving to work.  I was the first person there so I just relaxed in my car.  It was light outside, but the sun had not risen yet.

My First Bow Buck

I was starting my second year of bow hunting. It was about 2 weeks into the bow season and I already shot my first deer with my bow on opening day. It was a pretty nice doe. It was now October 19th, 1997, and I was going to hunt down by an area I call the soy bean patch. I have a stand in a corner of a bean field. A river is just to my left, a huge soybean field is out in front of me, and there is a little bit of woods and a hay field behind me.

I went to the Kansas City Sportshow and was looking at a booth about hunting Safari animals. This gentleman came up to me and asked where I was from, because he noticed my Guide shirt. I told him and he looked at me and said he was from there, and started telling me everyone he knew including my family. We talked a little bit and he told me that he has shot every Safari animal you can think of but never shot a whitetail deer. I was shocked when I saw pictures of his hunting room and it was stacked wall to wall with mounts and not one deer.

Deer Hunting Success

It was December 1st, 1988. Deer gun season had arrived. I was looking forward to the season with anticipation. This would be my 10th year of hunting and I had not shot a deer yet. I have shot at a few here and there but in some years I didn't even see any. This year was going to be different I just had that feeling.

It was a cool November 12th morning. As I sat in the stand and waited for the sun to come up, I could hear movement all around me. My dad was hunting up on this ridge not too far away, so I could hear him rattling right at first light. We make a plan when we're hunting in stands that are kind of close of how we're going to call. He rattled first, and then about 10-15 minutes later I'll do a calling sequence.

First Buck - Finally!

It was 1996 and my 18th year of hunting. I turned 30 that year and I was beginning to wonder if I was ever going to shoot a buck. Up to this point I was strictly a gun hunter and had only taken a handful of does. That year I did pick up the bow and began to venture into the world of bowhunting.

I was working on getting my lodge ready for the 2008 hunting season and my son wanted to go scouting for Youth season whitetail deer here in Kansas. I told my son that I was busy and he should go out and let me know what he could find (wanted him to do something on his own).

My son came home right after dark and told me about these 3 larger than life bucks that he saw. I told him it sounded like a fish story cause these 3 bucks kept growing every time I heard the story.

It was the afternoon of November 6th, 2002. My dad picked me up from school, and we rushed home to get ready to go out to the woods for an evening rut hunt. After we got ready, we drove to our spot, sprayed down and began walking towards our spots. It was only my second year of deer hunting, so I still hunted on the ground, so I had my groundblind and my dad wasn't too far away in his treestand.

The first Buck I harvested was a little 3x3 blacktail with a broken tine. There wasn't any dramatics to the story. I was 13 and hunting with my dad. We got out of his truck to stretch our legs.
