My First Buck

The first Buck I harvested was a little 3x3 blacktail with a broken tine. There wasn't any dramatics to the story. I was 13 and hunting with my dad. We got out of his truck to stretch our legs.

Wife's First Hunt

I talked my wife into going hunting with me last spring, She had never been before and was kind of nervous about it. I bought her a bow and we spent the summer going to the range and practicing. Finally August 27th came and we headed out of town to my spot in the starkey unit in northeast Oregon (I've been hunting there for 10 years). We got camp set up and then we set up a 3d target to shoot a little bit. Just as we thought our bows were still shooting dead on.

Colorado Rookie
SOBLE

My first year with a Colorado resident tag in my pocket was for Elk in 2000. Being new in the area was daunting but I had made some good friends and was lucky enough to be invited into hunting camp with them. This hunt would be different than any other I had been on. Base camp was 6 miles in on horseback or in my case on the back of a mule. I am a big guy and apparently my new buddies figured I would hurt their horses so I got the lucky mule out of the herd. I have ridden horses off and on all my life but had never been on a mule. That was a great experience to say the least.

Colorado Hunting Rookie
SOBLE

I had just moved to Colorado in the summer of 1999. I had never even dreamed of hunting the Colorado mountains as a Utah resident but it made the move easier to handle. I didn't get to hunt that first year in Colorado but I did get to hunt with my Utah resident tag. What made this hunt special to me was it would be the last time for quite a while that my entire family would hunt together in Utah. Mom and Dad had moved to Idaho so only my brother could get a resident (cheap) tag. We were pretty excited about making the most of the trip.

Mikey is Something Special
Ohio Bowhunter

This is an incredible story that began back in 2005 and I want to share it with all.

The story is about a kid nicknamed Mikey who touched my life in a profound way like no other.

Surprise Buck
SOBLE

This is a very short story from 2005 that I will call the surprise buck. We like to hunt high desert areas for mule deer. Lots of sagebrush and Aspens and scattered with Cedar trees. The particular area we were hunting in 2005 was public land that surrounded a small ranch. We had just completed a small drive through a large stand of Aspens with no luck other than a few does.

Work or Hunt and Taking It Easy
SOBLE

1997 found me in an awkward situation when hunting season rolled around. The opening day was moved to mid week and like most of us, I had to work. Now to me opening day is a religious holiday. You can take away my whole hunt but just give me opening day. My work schedule was 8-5 most days but quite often the opportunity to work overtime to make a delivery deadline came around. I was in luck today. Around 4:30 in the afternoon we had a delivery come in that had to be made that night. The customer was 4 hours away, so I struck a deal with the boss.

Friends, Lessons and Antelope
SOBLE

In 1994 my  buddy, Corey, and I decided it would be fun to hunt Antelope here in Utah. We knew it was extremely hard to draw a buck tag so we put our applications in for a doe tag in an area we have never even been to. After the draw results found us successful we started to what we call "The Plan". Of course the plan was, there is no plan. We arrived at our "campsite" well after dark and pitched the tent, fixed some dinner and hit the sack super excited for our luck to have this tag.

Jim said to me, "We ought to get an early start in the morning, that way if the antelope see the truck in the dark they won’t spook very far." Little did I know what would be in store for me the next day.
