Big Ontario Deer
by Philip Welsh

On the first day of the November deer season in Ontario, myself and 7 others prepared to hunt a very large wooded area. We had seen a bear, and a couple of moose early in the moring, and heard some deer yelling at us. We moved deeper into the woods, and had an area surrounded by ponds and marshes. With the other guys (and girl) we did a hunt of this area. Within 5 minutes, there was a small buck shot. A few minutes later, a doe was down. I was feeling left out of the action, when I suddenly saw movement. I could see the buck coming towards me. I got down on one knee, and fired. He stopped, and looked around. I must have missed, because he kept coming. At about 35 yards, I let off another shot. He put his head down and ran full out about 25 feet beside me. I could not get the bolt action 30-06 reloaded in time as he flew by me. I went around a thicket and looked in the direction he was going. There was a small pond there, and he had jumped into it. I had the blood flowing, and decided to get my buck out of there. I stripped down and cleared some ice from the edge of the pond, and went in to get him. In the mud and water up to my chest, I grabbed his tail and pulled him out. I quickly got dressed again, and went back to see him. I reached into the water, and pulled up a very large rack. It was all I needed to warm up. With some pics and some hootin it up, we started the chore of getting him out of there, with the other 2 deer. He hung at the butchers dressed, hide and head off at 187 lbs. I measured him at 143 1/2 and will remember that hunt for the rest of my life.

Hunting Tips

Stick to it!
As a young man and an average hunter, I was always amazed that some hunters were always the ones at the check station or skinning rack with the largest bucks - or with bucks at all! The same guys, time after time! Were they able to hunt virgin land, with huge whitetails abundant? Not in my case! At that point, I was hunting public land, a military reservation in southeastern Georgia. What was...[Read More]
