It was the second weekend of bowhunting this year, 2008. I had moved my stand the previous weekend to a more select spot which was deeper in a swamp on the Wolf River. I had been in my stand since 6:00 am and it was creeping up on 9:30, nothing but squirrels and one lone opossum to get my attention so far. Scanning the area watching for any movement I locked on one opening in the tree line.
It seemed odd to see reddish limbs in a cypress swamp, then the limbs moved all I could think was "Lord are you Messing with me"? The distance was about 150 yards away so I fumbled for my call to draw it in. One long whine with my primos can call the deer locked on to the sound and ran straight at me clearing about 100 yards in seconds. I could not see the buck at this point and it had stopped moving so I called again but shorter this time. It worked the buck started moving again, slowly breaking sticks and limbs the whole time.
Finally this thing steps out so I can see it in its entirety (Thank You God!) at about 40 yards and no good shot but getting closer. At 20 yards it gets broadside to me, I am trying to contain my excitement and lock on my target. My Browning bow with 75 lb. draw has never pulled so easy, and then the release. At this point I am exhausted, shaking from the neck down and trying not to fall out of my stand. The 30 minute wait lasted for ever, now my feet were on the ground and trying to locate my arrow. It's a complete pass through, covered in blood and hair and the Grim reaper broad head is still intact. The tracking was easy and short (40 yards in) there it was, so I broke into a dance which lasted 5 minutes. It is very hard to dance and count points so I had to count 10 times.
