Environment Yukon is now accepting permit hunt applications from Yukon hunters interested in one of 40 elk hunt permits offered in the territory, Environment Minister Elaine Taylor announced.
The deadline for hunters to file their application for the permit hunt draw is the close of office hours on Friday, August 14.
A limited harvest of elk, as identified in the Elk Management Plan, which was endorsed in June 2008 following extensive public consultation, will serve a number of objectives including:
- • Reducing elk-vehicle collisions and elk-agriculture conflicts;
- • Increasing the appreciation and value of elk as a wild food; and
- • Further reducing the risk of winter tick transfer to other wildlife species.
Thirty-six permits will be available for the Takhini herd and four will be offered for the Braeburn herd.
The hunt is one of the most complex permit hunts developed by the department, and hunters should carefully review the permit application information before applying for the draw.
Hunters will be applying for a permit to hunt in one of eight different opportunities over two different season dates. This includes the application to hunt either male or female elk in either a core or a buffer area.
Unlimited permits will also be provided in an elk exclusion area located outside the elk management area to help ensure the elk range does not expand beyond their traditional range. This hunt is not part of the draw and hunters can obtain their permit on request.
The department has maps available to help hunters complete their applications forms. Hunters require permission to hunt within one kilometre of a residence and to hunt on Category A and B First Nations lands.
