New Sighting-In Range For Hunters 12/12/03
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) opened its new sighting-in range at the C.F. Phelps Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Fauquier County this week. The facility, located off Rogers Ford Road, offers hunters a safe place to become more proficient with their firearms. Man Charged with 55 Wildlife Violations 10/17/03
Game wardens with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) have charged Daniel Edsel Edwards of Sandy Level in Pittsylvania County with 55 counts of wildlife violations in connection with an illegal bear trap and bait operation. Officers with VDGIF’s Special Law Enforcement Assistance Patrol (SLAP) team conducted the 47-day surveillance that led to the charges. [4 Comments]

Feeding Black Bears Banned 07/28/03
The Board of Game and Inland Fisheries recently adopted a regulation making it unlawful to place or to distribute food, minerals, carrion, or similar substances to feed or to attract bears. That regulation became effective on July 1, 2003. Of the 27 states that have bears and allow bear hunting, 16 of them restrict bear feeding in some way. [Comments?]

CWD Not Found in Deer Samples 05/19/03
Samples collected from 1,114 Virginia deer during 2002 have all tested negative for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) according to representatives of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF). The Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study in cooperation with the school of veterinary medicine at the University of Georgia ran the tests. [Comments?]

David Stack Reward Continues to Grow 05/12/03
More anonymous donations of reward money have been pledged to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) for the arrest of the individual or individuals responsible for the death of David B. Deer, Bear, and Turkey Harvest Figures Available 02/21/03
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) announced preliminary figures for bear, deer, and turkey harvests for the 2002-2003 Fall Seasons. Overall, there were no surprises. Bear and deer preliminary harvest figures are consistent with recent years. Preliminary fall harvest figures for wild turkey declined significantly from last year, however they remain only slightly below the average for the last five years. [Comments?]

Hunting Seasons Not Closed 10/14/02
