New Sighting-In Range For Hunters
Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries

Posted on: 12/12/03 [Comments?]

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) opened its new sighting-in range at the C.F. Phelps Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Fauquier County this week. The facility, located off Rogers Ford Road, offers hunters a safe place to become more proficient with their firearms. Unlike shooting ranges, the sighting-in range will not be available for organized competitive shooting.

The sighting-in range is open for public use Tuesday through Sunday, September 1 through March 31. It will be closed on Mondays. Hours of operation vary depending on the month. In December the range is open from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and from 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. Hours and range rules are posted at the facility.

Shooters must wear eye and ear protection and shoot from designated shooting stations. Only paper targets are permitted. Rifles, muzzleloading rifles or shotguns are the only firearms allowed. Shooters are responsible for cleaning up all brass, shells and target materials.

19 Pt. Tennessee Deer
It was the second weekend of bowhunting this year, 2008. I had moved my stand the previous weekend to a more select spot which was deeper in a swamp on the Wolf River. I had been in my stand since 6:00 am and it was creeping up on 9:30, nothing but squirrels and one lone opossum to get my attention so far. Scanning the area watching for any movement I locked on one opening in the tree line.
