If you are a Vermont deer hunter, you probably care a lot about how Vermont's deer herd is managed and you likely would help in managing the herd if you could. Now, you have that chance - on opening weekend of Vermont's rifle deer season.
Vermont wildlife biologists will be operating biological deer check stations at 17 locations on opening weekend of the rifle season, November 10 and 11. If you do get a buck, it's a great opportunity to get your deer weighed, aged and have it examined by a professional. The biological information collected will help biologists assess the physical condition of Vermont's deer. Information about the animal's age, weight and antler development will help the department with future deer management decisions.
"Vermont hunters are very interested in the health of the deer herd," said John Austin, acting director of wildlife. "The information we receive from them is an integral part of managing the deer herd. We encourage hunters to bring their bucks into these biological check stations so we can monitor how well deer are doing throughout the state. They will go home knowing they have contributed valuable data to Vermont's wildlife conservation efforts."
All of the biological check stations listed below will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on November 10 and 11: Barre, R&L Archery; Bennington, Marty's Sports; East Corinth, General Store; Eden Mills, Cloutier's Market; Guilford, General Store; Hardwick, Rite-Way Sports; Hinesburg, General Store; Hubbardton, Lake Hortonia Country Store; Island Pond, Northern Wildlife Sports; Jericho, General Store; Lyndonville, Village Sports Shop; Middlebury, Vermont Field Sports; Pittsford, Keith's Country Store; Randolph, Tewksbury's Store; Springfield, Fire Station; Swanton, St. Marie's Store; White River, Steve's Auto.
