A West Rutland man is facing serious charges after allegedly hunting deer over bait and salt and aiming his rifle at Vermont State Game Wardens while watching them through his rifle scope.
On December 1, opening day of Vermont's muzzleloader season, State Game Wardens Sgt. Don Isabelle and Morgan Jones were responding to a tip that a person was illegally hunting deer over bait and salt in a field in West Rutland. As they approached the field, they observed a hunter in a blind. Using his binoculars, Sgt. Isabelle observed the hunter aiming his scoped modern .243 caliber hunting rifle directly at them, apparently while watching them.
David Grandchamp, age 50, of West Rutland was cited to appear in Rutland District Court on January 28, 2008 to answer to charges of reckless endangerment, hunting deer over bait and salt, and failing to mark his blind with his name and address.
"We take this offense very seriously," said Col. Robert Rooks, Chief Game Warden for the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. "Mr. Grandchamp was standing outside his blind while scoping the wardens in what appeared to be an attempt to intimidate them to leave the area."
If convicted of the offenses, Mr. Grandchamp could be given a jail sentence of one year and 60 days, be fined $2,500 and lose his hunting and fishing licenses for three years.
