The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department will be conducting 26 biological deer check stations on Vermont's Youth Deer Hunting Weekend, November 8 and 9, to collect information on the age and health of Vermont deer.
The department conducted biological deer check stations during the first weekend of rifle season in the past, but made the change to Youth Weekend to continue gathering data on yearling bucks.
"The move from rifle season is designed to get a representative look at the yearling buck population because youths can still take spike-antlered deer during Youth Weekend," said Shawn Haskell, Vermont's deer project leader. "Data from the does and fawns taken by youths also will be helpful."
"It's a great opportunity to get your deer weighed, aged and have it examined by a state wildlife biologist," added Haskell. "The information collected will help biologists assess the physical condition of Vermont's deer, and the data about the animal's age, weight and antler development will help with future deer management decisions."
All of the biological check stations listed below will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on November 8 and 9: Barre, R & L Archery; Eden Mills, Clute's Country Store; Glover, Currier's Market; East Corinth, General Store; Guilford, Country Store; Jericho, General Store; Pittsford, Keith's Country Store; Hubbardton, Lake Hortonia Country Store; Pawlet, Mach's General Store; Bennington, Marty's Sports & Gunsmithing; Sharon, Tracy's Midway Station; Island Pond, Northern Wildlife; Danby, Otter Creek Campground; Enosburg Falls, Magnons Quick Stop; Hardwick, Riteway Sports; Swanton, Ste Marie's; Springfield, Fire Department; Randolph, Tewksbury's Store; Middlebury, Vermont Field Sports; Lyndonville, Village Sport Shop; Wardsboro, Wardsboro Country Store; Derby, Wright's Enterprises; Bridgewater Corners, Country Store; Concord, Barnie's Market; Waitsfield, Village Grocery; Stowe, Fly Rod Shop.
