Vermont Anterless Deer Deadline Aug 24th

If you want to apply for a 2007 Vermont muzzleloader antlerless deer hunting permit, you need to make sure your lottery application is postmarked or delivered to the Agency of Natural Resources' Fish & Wildlife Department by August 24.

An "antlerless deer" is defined as a deer without antlers or with antlers less than three inches long. A hunter who wins an antlerless deer permit in the lottery may take one antlerless deer by muzzleloader during the December 1 - 9 muzzleloader season. Antlerless deer permit applications are available on the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department's website www.vtfishandwildlife.com. Go to 'Hunting and Trapping' and click on Lottery Applications. Applications also are available at license agents throughout the state.

The wildlife management units (WMUs) that will have muzzleloader antlerless permits this year are A, B, F1, F2, H1, H2, J1, J2, K1, M2, N, O2, and Q. The 11,050 muzzleloader antlerless permits being issued are expected to net a harvest of just over 2,000 deer. "Harvesting antlerless deer is an important population control tool," said State Wildlife Biologist Forrest Hammond. "The WMUs receiving the most permits are areas where deer numbers have the potential to rise above the level that the habitat can support. We strongly encourage hunters who enjoy hunting with a muzzleloader to apply for permits and help manage Vermont's deer population." The cost is $10 for residents and $25 for nonresidents. A person may submit only one application.

19 Pt. Tennessee Deer
It was the second weekend of bowhunting this year, 2008. I had moved my stand the previous weekend to a more select spot which was deeper in a swamp on the Wolf River. I had been in my stand since 6:00 am and it was creeping up on 9:30, nothing but squirrels and one lone opossum to get my attention so far. Scanning the area watching for any movement I locked on one opening in the tree line.
