Utah Gets Lead in Big Poaching Case
Utah Div. of Wildlife Resources

Posted on: 05/28/09 [Comments?]

Acting on a tip received on the Utah Turn-in-a-Poacher (UTiP) hotline, DWR officers and Garfield County Sheriff's deputies served a search warrant on a home and shed in Panguitch on Saturday, May 23 and Monday, May 25.

After serving the warrant, the officers found the heads of eight mule deer bucks, one mule deer doe and two pronghorn bucks. The suspects in the case also admitted taking one more mule deer buck and an additional mule deer doe, making it one of the biggest poaching cases in southern Utah in recent memory.

Gary Lyndyl Harp, 35, and Gavin Smith, 19, both residents of Panguitch, were booked into the Garfield County jail on charges of wanton destruction of protected wildlife.

This case would not have been possible without a tip provided by concerned citizens and the cooperation of Garfield County Sheriff Danny Perkins. The Utah Turn-In-A-Poacher hotline number is 1 (800) 662-DEER (3337).

The DWR received the tip just two days after the public learned about a poaching case involving 18 deer in central Utah.

First Buck for Pennsylvania 13 Year Old
It was the second day of Pennsylvania deer (rifle) season. It was a little windy that afternoon, but the wind was on our side. My grandfather and I were hunting the edge of a swamp. My little brother and my dad were posted about 1,500 yards NE of us. We were hoping that they would spook something to us. I had my trusty Marlin 32 special. It has taken deer.
