Tennessee HAAP Turkey Hunts Cancelled
Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency

Posted on: 01/23/08 [Comments?]

Holston Army Ammunition Plant (HAAP) has cancelled plans for any turkey hunts for the upcoming 2008 spring turkey hunting season, according to Bruce Cole, HAAP Natural Resources Specialist.

"The installation is attempting to address new security requirements for the hunting program and will not be able to have the program approved in time for the spring turkey hunts," said Cole. "Although the installation hopes to implement deer hunts again in 2008, it is still uncertain at this time if it will be able to do so."

Cole also advises that if the installation is able to hold hunts in the future, one of the new requirements of the program will be that all individuals (regardless of age) will be required to have completed a hunter education course in order to hunt on the installation.

This is the same hunter education requirement that has been in effect at Fort Campbell for several years.

Tennessee law requires all hunters, at least 10 years of age and born on or after January 1, 1969, to have proof of satisfactory completion of a hunter education course before hunting any species. This currently includes all hunters from age 10 to 39.

Those hunters, who are old enough to be exempt from the state law requirement but who want to hunt on HAAP or Fort Campbell, can find a current list of hunter education classes here. HAAP and Fort Campbell will not accept the Apprentice License.

California Gobbler
Connor Morello, age 11 shot his first Gobbler this season in California. The tom took about 30 minutes to work into a 20 yard - 1 shot kill. Dad got to experience the hunt by sitting directly behind Connor as this big bearded 9 inch tom strutted his stuff. Connor said " prior to this hunting bunnies was great, but calling in turkeys is UNBELIEVABLE, it's now my number 1 sport".
