Want to learn more about deer hunting and why "Life's Better Outdoors?" Check out Joe Kelly and Son Outdoors in the Moore Building during the upcoming Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic. Joe Kelly and Son have one of the largest whitetail displays, with racks that score in the 170 to 250-class range. Included in their collection is the world record Hanson Buck and a Goliath buck. Their 40-foot-long display contains some of the finest whitetails from the northwestern United States and Canada.

The 24th Annual Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic will be held at the State Fairgrounds in Columbia March 28-30. Doors will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, March 28; from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 29; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 30.

New for 2008 are the Comedy Canines and Steve Hoddy of Earthquest - Birds of Prey. Some returning events are Roark Ferguson or "Big Snake Daddy," and the Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic will feature the third State Archery-In-Schools Tournament.

For more information on the Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic, call the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Columbia office at (803) 734-4008.

Admission to the 2008 Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic is $6, and parking is $2. Seniors 60 and over get in for $5 while children 10 and under are admitted free. Visitors bringing five canned-food items for Harvest Hope Food Bank receive $1 off admission.

Classic-goers will find more than 300 exhibitors on site with the latest fishing, hunting and outdoor equipment for show and sale. Several free events include DNR's Take One Make One trailer with air rifle and electronic shooting ranges and Bass Tub fishing technique demonstrations. Richland County Sheriff's Department will also set up their Kid Print program on Saturday, March 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The DNR's education staff and volunteers will be on hand to help kids catch a catfish at the highly popular SC Reel Kids Fishing Pond.

The Palmetto Sportsmen's Classic is sponsored by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, Harry Hampton Memorial Wildlife Fund, WIS-TV, WCOS Radio, SportsTalkSC, Professional Printers, Bob Redfern's Outdoor Magazine, National Striped Bass Association, The State newspaper, South Carolina Association of Conservation Districts, and the City of Columbia.

DNR protects and manages South Carolina's natural resources by making wise and balanced decisions for the benefit of the state's natural resources and its people.

11x8 Alberta Non-Typical Whitetail Trophy
I saw this deer last year, but was unable to get a shot away due to this buck's superior sixth sense, even with the wind in my favor he was able to sense my presence. I had seen this buck get down on his knees and crawl thru a pinch point that had minimal amounts of cover. I nicknamed him the grey ghost cause of his grey coat and superior vanishing and appearing tricks. One minute there he was busted no where to go and the next voosh gone disappearing into nothing.
