Saskatchewan Gives Elk Hunters Another Chance
Saskatchewan Environment

The Ministry of Environment is offering elk management licences to people who would like to hunt antlerless elk in the Cypress Hills area.

The management hunt will take place from February 4 to 16, 2008. There will be 150 antlerless elk management licences available. Hunters will be limited to one licence each, with a harvest limit of one antlerless elk per licence.

The elk management hunt will be in the Cypress Hills area in Wildlife Management Zone 6 and in a portion of Zone 7 located east of Highway 271 and Grid Road 615.

The $19.81 elk management licences go on sale Tuesday, January 15, 2008, in person only and on a "first come, first served" basis, from the Ministry of Environment office in Maple Creek. To be eligible for an elk management licence, hunters must be Saskatchewan residents and possess and produce a valid Wildlife Habitat Certificate.

As a condition of the licence, the head of any elk harvested must be submitted to any Ministry of Environment field office for Chronic Wasting Disease testing no later than February 18, 2008.

Management hunts are a tool that the ministry uses to reduce the number of animals in an area. The elk management hunt was developed after consultation with local landowners. As the hunt is outside of regular hunting season, hunters must obtain permission from landowners before hunting on private land. All other hunting regulations apply to the elk management hunt.

Oregon Coast Blacktail Deer Hunt
This is a picture of the blacktail buck I killed last year (2008) in the Alsea unit of West Oregon during the rifle season. I was hunting with my friends on a Sunday morning and this buck jumped up from some vine maple with 2 other large bucks and at least 3 does who were all bedded in an 8 year old clear cut. I managed to pick him out in the confusion of deer running every which way and got one shot into him.
