Nova Scotia "Hunters Helping Hungry" a Success

Nova Scotia's hunters helped many local families by contributing to the Hunters Helping the Hungry program. The program's second year provided more than 775 kilograms of deer and moose meat for the province's food banks.

"We are delighted by the generosity the hunting community has shown," said Natural Resources Minister David Morse. "The department is very proud of the program's success and looks forward to showing its continued support."

Through the program, hunters are able to donate a portion of deer or moose meat to families in need.

"Thanks to Nova Scotia's hunters, we were able to provide about 6,800 servings of protein to many community food banks, shelters and soup kitchens across the province," said Dianne Swinemar, executive director of Feed Nova Scotia. "There is always a need for protein to help create balanced meals for many Nova Scotians. We would like to thank the hunters for recognizing Feed Nova Scotia as a worthy cause."

Hunters Helping the Hungry promotes regulated hunting and making the best use of sustainable natural resources.

"The program exceeded all of our expectations and we have already begun discussing plans for the next hunting season," said Tony Rodgers, executive director of Nova Scotia's Federation of Anglers and Hunters. "Hunters have made a big impact in Nova Scotia communities, and we will continue to work hard to conserve our wildlife while using it in a sustainable and responsible way."

Hunters Helping the Hungry is a joint initiative of Feed Nova Scotia and the hunting community, in partnership with the Department of Natural Resources, www.novascotiahunting.com, Eastern Woods and Waters, and the N.S. Federation of Anglers and Hunters.

The province is also working with community groups to develop a poverty reduction strategy, and this program is just one way to help ease the burden of Nova Scotians struggling to provide for their families.
