Seventeen Trappers across the Northwest Territories (NWT) were recognized for their achievements on the trap line for the 2004-05 trapping season.
The Trappers Recognition Award Initiative is a part of the Genuine Mackenzie Valley Furs program, administered by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, acknowledges outstanding achievements in trapping. Trappers from five regions received awards based on four categories: Youth Trappers’ Who Sold Fur At Auction; Senior Trappers’ Who Sold Fur At Auction; Highest Number of Pelts and; Highest Values Sold. Minister of ITI, Honourable Brendan Bell, says he is particularly pleased, for the first time in the program’s history, to see accomplishments of youth on the trap line recognized. “The young people receiving awards through this initiative, and the many other youth actively trapping in the NWT, confirm that the fur industry continues to be a vibrant healthy sector of the economy providing youth with productive choices and alternatives.” ITI promotes and supports the Genuine Mackenzie Valley Fur Program as part of Traditional Economy.
