Maple River NWR

Description:
The Maple River National Wildlife Refuge is a mixture of USFWS owned land and easements in Dickey County, North Dakota. The refuge is located along the Maple River and Maple River Waterfowl Production Area is within the refuge boundary. The refuge and WPA are an important breeding, brood rearing, and migration/resting area for migratory waterfowl and other birds. It is an attractive area for resident species of wildlife as well.Land use on the easement portion of the refuge is primarily farmland with small amount of grassland. There are also wetlands, shelter belts and a farm stead located on the easement portion of the refuge. The WPA has a mix of grassland and wetland acres. The grasslands are managed specifically for the production of migratory birds and other wildlife. Water management features of Maple River NWR include a dam which impounds water on the Maple River, an excavated ditch which allows overflow from the Maple River to enter a marsh during high flows,and a 75 acre semi-permanent marsh and water control structure.
