Antlerless deer hunters looking for a place to hunt this fall might find the opportunity by placing their name on a list for landowners who want a good deer harvest. Bill Jensen, North Dakota Game and Fish Department big game biologist, said he is working with a number of landowners who are willing to host doe hunters to achieve it.

"This year alone we have already matched more than 250 antlerless deer hunters with 35 landowners," Jensen said. "And we continue to receive interest from landowners who would like help in harvesting does."

Landowners are still seeking doe hunters in hunting units 2D, 2I, 2K2, 3B3, 3C, 3E1, 3E2, 3F2, 4A, 4B, 4D, 4E and 4F.

Jensen emphasizes the program is designed to direct antlerless hunters to specific areas to reduce deer depredation problems in the future. It is not intended for buck hunters. "These landowners have asked for help in reducing the deer population in their areas," he said. "The best method for controlling the deer population is by harvesting does."

Interested hunters can get their name on a list of possible participants by accessing the Game and Fish Department's website at North Dakota Hunter Contact Form. Hunters who do not have Internet access can call the department’s main office in Bismarck at (701) 328-6300.

Hunters will provide their address, hunting unit(s) where they hold valid antlerless licenses, and if using firearm or bow. From this list the department will select the number of hunters landowners have agreed to host. These hunters will be sent the landowner's name, phone number and any information relating to the landowner's specific situation.

North Dakota's 2008 deer gun season runs from Nov. 7-23. The archery season extends through Jan. 4, 2009, and muzzleloader season runs from Nov. 28 – Dec. 14.

11x8 Alberta Non-Typical Whitetail Trophy
I saw this deer last year, but was unable to get a shot away due to this buck's superior sixth sense, even with the wind in my favor he was able to sense my presence. I had seen this buck get down on his knees and crawl thru a pinch point that had minimal amounts of cover. I nicknamed him the grey ghost cause of his grey coat and superior vanishing and appearing tricks. One minute there he was busted no where to go and the next voosh gone disappearing into nothing.
