The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission announces a partnership with N.C. Handicapped Sportsmen, Inc. to help make hunting and fishing activities more accessible to the disabled community.

"We'd like to build an awareness of what's available," said Edward Mays, president of N.C. Handicapped Sportsmen, Inc. "We want more disabled folks who are interested to get outdoors and enjoy themselves. This is a great way to do it."

A memorandum of understanding was finalized today at the Commission board meeting, held at the agency's headquarters on the Centennial Campus of N.C. State University.

The agreement comes as part of an ongoing mission of the Commission and its Disabled Sportsman Program.

North Carolina has one of the more progressive programs in the nation for sportsmen with disabilities. Efforts are directed towards assisting access to favorable recreational areas, allowing the use of equipment designed to overcome specific disabilities and encouraging sportsmen to take advantage of hunting and fishing opportunities.

"The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission wants to stay at the forefront of providing sportsmen with the best possible opportunities for hunting, fishing, boating and other outdoor recreation," said Susie Fish, the Commission's Disabled Sportsman Program coordinator. "This cooperative effort enables more people, regardless of personal circumstances, to be involved."

South African Blesbucks
I was several days into a 10-day hunt in the Groot Winterhook mountains of South Africa's eastern cape. I already had an nyala, duiker, eland, baboon, 3 black wildebeest, 2 blue wildebeest, a black springbok and a mountain reedbuck. Next on my list was a blesbuck pair, one male and one female.
