There's no glass ceiling when you're outdoors. In fact, some of the best outdoorsmen in North Carolina are women.
The opportunity to join with them is offered through Becoming an Outdoors Woman, a hands-on experience offered by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission, at a weekend retreat scheduled for June 8-10 in Tyrell County at the Eastern Environmental 4-H Conference Center in Columbia.
The cost is $185, which includes lodging, class materials and meals. Instruction and participation will be offered with shotgun, muzzleloading and rifle marksmanship; basic camping and backpacking; canoe, kayak and motorboat skills; digital photography; wilderness survival; decoy carving; outdoor cooking; stream ecology; rock climbing; and basic fishing, fly-tying and an introduction to fly-fishing.
For those who have completed a Becoming an Outdoors Woman and want more, there is the advanced Beyond Becoming an Outdoors Woman, with two events currently scheduled:
- * May 5-6 at the McDowell Nature Preserve on Lake Wylie, for kayaking, fishing, archery, camp cooking, basic camping and backpacking. An overnight trip in platform tents, limited to 24 participants at $75 per person.
- * Aug. 4 at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education near Brevard, for the annual "Fly-Fishing Experience." A one-day program with final two hours fly-fishing on Davidson River. Cost is $40 per person.
Women ages 18 and over can participate. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, and the registration fee must be paid in advance. Workshops can fill quickly, so early registration is advised. For additional information, call (919) 707-0172.
