New Hampshire Offers Free "Turkey Talking" Seminar
New Hampshire Fish and Game

Posted on: 04/16/08 [Comments?]

Sharpen up your turkey hunting skills by signing up for a free seminar called "Talking Turkey," with Tooky River Calls pro-staff members and Wildlife Biologist Mark Ellingwood, on Wednesday, April 23, 2008, from 7 - 9 p.m. at the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, 11 Hazen Drive, Concord, N.H. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. To register, call Mark Beauchesne at 603-271-6355.

This free talk will get you ready for the spring gobbler season. Tooky River Calls pro-staff will explain how to use locator calls, along with traditional box calls, slate call and mouth calls. Pro-staffers will also discuss hunting setup, ethics and turkey hunting safety. Ellingwood will explore turkey ecology, behavior and history. Get the know-how and skill you need to safely and successfully bag a wild gobbler in the Granite State's wild turkey woods!

"The seminar is a great opportunity to fine-tune your calling skills," said Tom Staples, owner of Tooky River Calls in Contoocook, N.H. "This is a 'how-to' session -- we'll put the calls in the hands of members of the audience. I like the idea of someone who has never used a call before successfully making a life-like call."

Turkey hunting in New Hampshire is possible only because of an amazing restoration success story, according to Ellingwood. Before turkeys were reintroduced to the state in 1975, there had been no wild turkeys in New Hampshire for more than a century. "In 2008, an expected 15-20,000 turkey hunters will enjoy tens of thousands of days of recreation; generate millions of dollars of economic activity for our state economy; and accumulate a lifetime of exciting stories and fond memories with family and friends in pursuit of the leanest, healthiest organic food that planet has to offer," said Ellingwood. "Come join us to learn more about New Hampshire's invaluable wild turkey resource."

California Trophy Blacktail Buck
The buck was on a dead run with a doe. He stopped to look at me after I shouted "Oh S*#@!" He was standing broad side at 60 yards. I shot him just behind his front shoulder, taking out the lungs and dropping him in his tracks. My advice, stay alert and always be ready to shoot, you never know when opportunity will knock and how long or short it will last.
