The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is seeking public input on moose management in New Hampshire's Connecticut Lakes Region (the area north of Route 26 to the Canadian border, known as Wildlife Management Units A1 and A2). Come share your views and preferences about future moose population management in this region at a public meeting set for 6:00 p.m. on August 13, 2008, at the Pittsburg Community/Church Hall, on Main Street in Pittsburg, N.H.
N.H. Fish and Game's current moose management plan for the Connecticut Lakes Region calls for a moose population reduction of up to 30% over the 10-year life of the plan (2006-2015). This planned reduction began nearly three years ago. At each 3-year interval, the plan directs the Department to seek public input to review the moose management strategy. The public meeting in Pittsburg will feature a 15-minute presentation by Kristine Rines, N.H. Fish and Game's moose project leader, on the current status of the moose population as it relates to the existing plan for managing the population.
"We're holding this meeting in order to give the public a chance to share their views on moose management in the region," said Steve Weber, Wildlife Division Chief for N.H. Fish and Game. "The Department will consider all the input received when considering future permit issuance in the Connecticut Lakes Region."
Currently, the moose population in the Connecticut Lakes Region is higher than goals set in the Big Game Plan. The White Mountain and Central regions are virtually at goal, and the North, Southwest and Southeast regions are slightly below targets set in the plan.
