The application period for the annual moose draw began May 20, Natural Resources Minister Donald Arseneault announced.
The number of licences available for moose hunters will increase this year," Arseneault said. "The quotas for moose licences are based on scientific evidence gathered by Department of Natural Resources staff. Government respects that process, and has approved the numbers recommended by big-game biologists and wildlife managers."
Arseneault noted the success of the recent three-pool structure to the moose draw, which is based on the number of times people have applied unsuccessfully to the draw since 1994. The system creates more equitable chances for hunting enthusiasts.
Long-time applicants (Group A) should have about a one-in-six chance of getting a licence. Group B applicants should have about a one-in-22 chance of being drawn, and Group C should have about a one-in-42 chance.
The 2008 moose-hunting season is set to run Sept. 25, 26 and 27. There will be 3,350 licences available this season, which is up by 233 from last year.
"I am pleased we are able to be responsive to the needs of New Brunswickers in making available a comprehensive and flexible process for application," Arseneault said. "Moose hunting is one of the most popular sports in our province, and we want everyone to have a fair chance in the draw."
There are three ways for New Brunswick residents to apply for moose licences. Hunters may apply by using a push-button telephone, or in person at any Natural Resources office or Service New Brunswick centre. New this year is the ability to apply online through the Natural Resources website.
The deadline for applications is Friday, June 13. Hunters have until 5 p.m. to apply for the draw in person, or until 8 p.m. to apply on the telephone-application line. Online applications will be available until midnight.
Hunters are encouraged to consult local newspapers, or visit the Natural Resources website at http://www.gnb.ca/0078/index-e.asp for more detailed information. Fact sheets are also available at all Natural Resources offices and Service New Brunswick centres.
The cost of applying for a moose licence is $9.04 (HST included) using the Aliant interactive-telephone system or online options, and $13.56 (HST included) at a Natural Resources or Service New Brunswick office.
Successful applicants will be drawn on an individual basis, based on their entire 9-digit Medicare number.
