New Brunswick DNR Permits Sunday Hunting

The Department of Natural Resources will permit Sunday hunting for three weekends per year beginning this fall. Natural Resources Minister Donald Arseneault introduced the amendment to the Fish and Wildlife Act in the New Brunswick legislature.

"I am pleased to introduce this amendment that will better reflect the current attitudes towards activities on Sunday and to lessen the restriction on hunters," Arseneault said. "At the same time, we are balancing the needs of the non-hunting public by limiting the number of weekends."

Sunday hunting will be permitted for three Sundays during the period of Oct. 28 - Nov. 17, inclusive, in any year. With this legislation, New Brunswick becomes the 10th jurisdiction in Canada to allow the practice.

"I'm proud of the compromise this bill proposes," Arseneault said. "Most importantly, the proposed change will not affect wildlife management, conservation or sustainability."

Deer hunting season is by far the most popular hunting season, which is at its peak during these weeks. Also hunted during this time are bear, small game, grouse, furbearers and migratory birds. Adding Sunday for this limited time frame will enable an estimated 70,000 of the 80,000 licence holders more equitable opportunity for the sport.
