Nevada Off-Road Race Could Affect Hunters
Nevada Dept. of Wildlife

Posted on: 09/19/08 [Comments?]

The Bureau of Land Management is considering an application for a special recreation permit for an off-road race that could have an impact on hunters with big game tags in five Southern Nevada hunt units. If the Best in the Desert Silver State 300 is approved, there will be no official road closures associated with the race; however, hunters should be aware that they will see an increase in both vehicle and human activity in usually remote areas of hunt units 223, 231, 241, 242 and 271.

The 300-mile race is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27 and with all associated activities will impact portions of Lincoln County and Clark County. In addition, pre-race reconnaissance ride will be offered Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 13 and 14. This ride will cover the entire length of the race course with speeds not to exceed 45 mph. There will be no speed restriction during the official race.

Race organizers anticipate approximately 100 spectators in addition to 150 event participants driving full-size trucks, buggies, motorcycles and ATV's. If the permit is granted hunters and other users will be asked to use the racecourse and surrounding areas at their own risk.

If you will be hunting in these units and would like more information please contact Chris Linehan, Outdoor Recreation planner with the Bureau of Land Management Caliente Field Office at 775-726-8126.

Pennsylvania Whitetail Deer & Black Bear
The whitetail deer was a 173 lb 8 pointer I harvested on public land in Pike County, Pennsylvania with archery equipment. The black bear was 150 lbs, and harvested on public land in Pike County, Pennsylvania with a 12 gauge 870 Remington using 2 3/4 inch Remington Premier Copper Solid Sabot Slugs. This was the second Pennsylvania black bear I have taken in 10 years in the Commonwealth.
