Free Range Day for Las Vegas Hunters
Nevada Dept. of Wildlife

Posted on: 08/12/09 [Comments?]

Las Vegas area hunters who need to sight-in their hunting rifles before the fall hunting season should mark Saturday, Aug. 29 on their calendars. That is the day the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) will hold a Free Range Day at the Desert Sportsman's Rifle and Pistol Club.

"We started this annual event several years ago so hunters could have a place where they can safely and legally sight-in their firearms. Through the years it has proven to be a popular event among hunters and other recreational shooters," said Doug Nielsen, Conservation Education Supervisor for NDOW.

As co-host for the event, the Desert Sportsman's Rifle and Pistol Club has reserved its 300-yard range for the day. Shooters will sight their firearms in first at 25 yards and then at 100 yards. The club is located at 12201 W. Charleston Blvd. Interested sportsman must reserve a shooting time by contacting Martin Olson, NDOW hunter education coordinator. He can be reached at 486-5127 x 3501.

Range officers and NDOW hunter education instructors will be on hand to insure safety procedures are followed and to provide assistance to those who need it. Participants will need to check in prior to shooting time so range personnel can verify the shooters' ammunition is matched to their firearm. Range time and targets are provided free of charge. Shooting time will begin at 8 a.m. and run through 5 p.m. There will be a maximum of 20 shooters per hour and each shooter will be able to reserve at least one hour of range time.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) protects, restores and manages fish and wildlife, and promotes fishing, hunting, and boating safety. NDOW's wildlife and habitat conservation efforts are primarily funded by sportsmen's license and conservation fees and a federal surcharge on hunting and fishing gear. Support wildlife and habitat conservation in Nevada by purchasing a hunting, fishing, or combination license. For more information, visit www.ndow.org.

11x8 Alberta Non-Typical Whitetail Trophy
I saw this deer last year, but was unable to get a shot away due to this buck's superior sixth sense, even with the wind in my favor he was able to sense my presence. I had seen this buck get down on his knees and crawl thru a pinch point that had minimal amounts of cover. I nicknamed him the grey ghost cause of his grey coat and superior vanishing and appearing tricks. One minute there he was busted no where to go and the next voosh gone disappearing into nothing.
