Montana FWP Seeks Input on Mtn. Lion Quotas

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission is seeking comment on tentative mountain lion hunting quotas for the 2008 season.

While the commission has tentatively agreed to maintain most of the 2007 mountain lion quotas, here’s an update on proposed changes:

Region 1—Northwestern Montana

  • * Hunting District 100: increase limited licenses from 20 to 25; female subquota would be 10.
  • * HD 104: increase limited licenses from 10 to 12; female subquota would be three.
  • * HD 109: increase limited licenses from four to six; female subquota would be two.

Region 2—Western Montana

  • * HD 200/201: increase quota from seven to nine either sex limited licenses; female subquota would be three

  • * HD 202/203: increase quota from 12 to 14 either sex limited licenses; female subquota would be five.
  • * HD 204/260/26: increase quota from three to four either sex limited licenses; female subquota would be one.
  • * HD 210: two legal male lion limited licenses.
  • * HD 211/216: two legal male lion limited licenses.
  • * HD 212/215: two legal male lion limited licenses.
  • * HD 213/214: one legal male lion limited license.
  • * HD 240: increase quota from three to four either sex limited licenses; female subquota would be one.
  • * HD 250: increase quota from four to five either sex limited licenses; female subquota would be one.
  • * HD 270: increase quota from 3 to four either sex limited licenses; female subquota would be one.
  • * HD 280/281/284/293: increase quota from four to five either sex limited licenses; female subquota would be one.
  • * HD 283/285: increase quota from three to four either sex limited licenses; female subquota would be one.
  • * HD 290/291/292/298: increase quota from four to five either sex limited licenses; female subquota would be one.

Region 4—Central Montana

  • * HD 404/421/444/450: reduce female quota from seven to three and male quota from four to three.
  • * HD 413/432: reduce female quota from four to three.
  • * HD 418/420/448: reduce female quota from four to three and male quota from four to three.
  • * HD 422/423/424/425/442: reduce male quota from 10 to seven.

North Carolina Turkey Hunt
6am finds me on schedule to my first listening location. The air is cool and sharp, there's no wind. The thick smoke from my breath hovers around my head as I stop to listen. It seems thick enough to convince me it's hampering my hearing, so I tip toe and listen rather then stand still.
