Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks will hold a series of public meetings in June to identify grizzly bear management issues and alternatives.
In 2003, FWP completed a review of the management program for grizzlies in southwestern Montana in the area around Yellowstone National Park. The agency is now developing plans for the federally-recognized Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem, the Cabinet/Yaak Ecosystem, and portions of the Bitterroot Ecosystem in Montana, as well as lands between these ecosystems.
Grizzly bear management issues include: human safety; habitat and restrictions on human use of grizzly bear habitat; population monitoring; trails and roads; livestock conflicts; research and more.
Potential grizzly bear management alternatives include: maintaining current programs, attempting to speed up the recovery of the grizzly, and prioritizing ecosystems for recovery efforts.
