The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will hold a public meeting in Helena on its proposal to remove the gray wolf from the federal list of endangered species.
USFWS announced in January that it proposes to delist the northern Rocky Mountain's gray wolves. The meeting in Helena is set for March 1, at Jorgenson's Inn & Suites, 1714 11th Ave. An informational public meeting will run from 3-5 p.m. and the official public hearing will follow from 6-8 p.m.
The proposal to delist wolves in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming--and parts of Washington and Utah--is based on the USFWS's determination that the northern Rocky Mountain population has exceeded recovery goals and all the potential threats to it, except inadequate state regulations in northwestern Wyoming, have been resolved.
Brief presentations on the USFWS's proposal will be offered from 3-4 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer period. Formal testimony will be accepted during the public hearing.
Send comments via e-mail to NRMGrayWolf@fws.gov; or mail to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Wolf Delisting, 585 Shepard Way, Helena, MT 59601.
Comments must be received within 60 days of the proposed rule's publication in the Federal Register, which occurred Feb. 8. For more information on the federal proposal to delist the northern Rocky Mountain's gray wolves, visit www.fws.gov/mountain-prairie/species/mammals/wolf/.
