Black Prairie Wildlife Management Area near Columbus is hosting the Amateur Field Trials Clubs of America National Amateur Derby Championship starting February 23.
Some of the top bird dogs from around the country will be featured in the event. Black Prairie WMA is no stranger to hosting big field trial competitions and it's hosting the Cajun Field Trials this week. Black Prairie WMA has become a popular destination for field trials and hosting these events does more than just benefit Black Prairie.
"We're excited to have this prestigious event in Mississippi," said Tommy Gollot, Mississippi Senate Committee Chairman for Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. "This not only gives us a chance to highlight what our state has to offer, it's also a direct economic boost for the local communities."
Hosting these events makes Mississippi and Black Prairie WMA a key part in field dog trials. Having a unique facility to host the event makes it appealing to those competing in the events.
"Mississippi has a long and proud tradition in the outdoors and events like these field trials are just an example of Mississippi being a leader in outdoor recreation," said Bo Eaton, Mississippi House of Representatives Committee Chairman on Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks ."We're happy that people from across the country will get an opportunity to see our wonderful natural resources."
