Mississippians who have not completed an approved hunter education course still have an opportunity to hunt this season according to the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. A one-time apprentice license allows persons born on or after January 1, 1972 to hunt, accompanied by a licensed or exempt resident hunter at least twenty-one (21) years of age when hunting. The cost of the apprentice license is the same as a regular license and may be purchased wherever licenses are sold.

"We often see cases where a person moves to Mississippi, or perhaps marries into a hunting family, but has never taken a Hunter Education Course," said Don Brazil, Director of Wildlife, and Law Enforcement."The Apprentice License allows them to hunt under supervision during the current season, while taking an approved course before the license renewal date."

Hunter education classes are offered in a variety of venues. Each course is 10 hours in length and includes a live firing exercise with a rifle/shotgun/airgun (instructor's preference). Students must attend all class sessions and successfully complete a written exam to pass the course.

There is another way to obtain Hunter Safety certification. It is known as the official Mississippi Hunter Education Internet Course. The course is not intended to replace the traditional classroom course but is designed to work within the established course curriculum and allow the Hunter Education certification to be obtained through out the year. The internet course allows the student to complete part of the course from any computer with internet access, and upon completing a pre-certification exam the student then comes to a pre-determined classroom setting to complete the final three hours. This allows the student time for interaction with the instructor, final testing, and the range firing exercise.

The Hunter Education program is designed to:
