Any hunter age 12 to 14 with a Firearms Safety Certificate and valid Minnesota firearms deer license is eligible to participate in the northwest Minnesota Special Youth Antlerless Deer Season on Oct. 18-19.

Counties included in the special youth season include Kittson, Lake of the Woods, Marshall, Pennington and Roseau. Youth can hunt on public as well as private lands with the permission of the landowners. The special hunt is located in Zones 100 and 200, but youth with a 2008 Minnesota firearms license from any zone may participate.

There is no application or lottery process for the season and no limit on the number of participants, although only one antlerless deer may be taken per hunter during this season. Participants may use one bonus permit, but the one-deer limit remains. Any youth participating in this hunt may still participate in the regular firearms deer season, but harvested deer count against the annual bag limit.

An adult mentor age 18 or older must accompany the youth hunter at all times during the hunt. The accompanying adult may not hunt, and party hunting is not allowed. Harvested deer must be tagged by the individual who took them.

The blaze-orange requirements apply to all hunters and trappers and all adult mentors of youth hunters in areas open to youth firearms deer hunting during this hunt.

The Minnesota Legislature created the northwest Minnesota Special Youth Antlerless Season in 2004. In 2007, an estimated 750 youth harvested more than 100 antlerless deer.

Massachusetts 8 Point Deer
This is one of two deer that I harvested this past 2008 season in eastern Massachusetts zone 11. The first one was a 7 point, one hundred eighty pound buck. This one is my biggest to date, was an 8 point two hundred two pounds that I shot at forty yards. All deer that I have taken have been by bow only. I'm looking very much towards the 2009 season!
