Michigan Special Deer Hunt Apps Due Aug 1
Michigan Dept. of Natural Resources

Posted on: 07/30/07 [Comments?]

Michigan Department of Natural Resources wildlife officials today reminded hunters that the application deadline for this year's special deer hunt in the Shiawassee River State Game Area is Aug. 1. Applications must be postmarked by this date. Applications postmarked after the deadline or filled out incorrectly will not be entered in the drawing.

"Many individuals enjoy hunting this area," said Barbara Avers, DNR wildlife biologist. "Therefore, we use this type of process so we can manage both the quality of the hunt and the size of the deer herd."

Avers said the application date is five weeks earlier than in past years, and the information contained on page 22 in the 2007 Michigan Hunting and Trapping Guide, which is being shipped to license agents and DNR offices this week, is incorrect.

"We receive numerous applications and we want to make sure all interested individuals know the application deadline has been moved forward so no one is left out," Avers said.

There is a specific process for applying for this special hunt. Directions on how to apply can be found on the DNR Web site at www.michigan.gov/dnr or applications can be picked up at local DNR offices. For additional information, hunters can contact the St. Charles Field Office at (989) 865-6211.

A youth deer hunt (Sept. 22-23) also will take place in the Shiawassee River State Game Area. Thirty permits will be issued. Youth must apply for the drawing before Aug. 1. Instructions for applying for the youth hunt also are posted on the DNR Web site.

The Shiawassee River State Game Area and the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge deer hunts are handled separately. For additional information on the refuge hunts, visit the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Web site at www.fws.gov/midwest/Shiawassee

Pennsylvania Whitetail Deer & Black Bear
The whitetail deer was a 173 lb 8 pointer I harvested on public land in Pike County, Pennsylvania with archery equipment. The black bear was 150 lbs, and harvested on public land in Pike County, Pennsylvania with a 12 gauge 870 Remington using 2 3/4 inch Remington Premier Copper Solid Sabot Slugs. This was the second Pennsylvania black bear I have taken in 10 years in the Commonwealth.
